Beating into that wind was about as much as the Mirage could do, and it took me quite a long time to work upwind far enough to turn about for the really wild ride. That turned out to be scarier than I’d expected, since the run took me west almost as fast as the waves, and when I rode the crests the waterline crept up to within an inch or two of the gunwales.
