Cracking Acorns — and Remembering the American Chestnut

…there’s nothing quite so efficient as two rocks and a knife. Unless like me, you own a granite mortar and pestle, even better than two rocks. I’m several days away from acorn bread even if I get the acorns cracked and shelled today, but standing there and sorting them out one by one gives me plenty of time to think. Acorns always make me think of chestnuts.

Create your own tradition. Don’t think of changes as negative. Tradition is what we make it, and all of those rituals and memories have to begin somewhere, with someone. Maybe your way won’t be the best for everyone, but as long as it fits what you want and what your family needs, who can argue?
