As far as the end-of-the-world thing goes, I expect that at the end of the world you’ll have plenty of debris around and you won’t need to worry about running out of fuel for campfires. Most of civilization burns pretty good.

Depending on the weather, a bivy can be dry and comfortable or cold and damp. With vents at both ends and an orientation into the wind, air moves through and carries away water vapor you exhale. This system doesn’t always work. Humid air in the cold morning hours makes dew inside the tent as well as outside, and you can’t always expect a drying flow through the shelter.

In India’s national forests where forest workers and tigers coexist, about five percent of the tiger population preys on humans. Tiger attacks dropped when workers began wearing Halloween masks on the backs of their heads, apparently facing both ways at once. Gradually, tigers adapted, and the ploy no longer works perfectly.
