Ponies
i dreamed i was a new clerk in a department with several other clerks. one guy was a jerk and obnoxious about my slow learning and mistakes. i got pissed and quit and went out of the store in a tirade, yelling at the guy first, then yelling to all the customers how good some of the women were who were cashiering and how complicated their jobs were. one woman heard i was out of work and said a relative of hers needed help. i got the job. it was on a boat made of a laquered sea animal’s skin. i don’t know what the animal was, but the skin was shades of deepening grey with sharp little ridges like chitinous teeth and sharp areas like a shark’s skin has. we were out in a bay, i guess you’d call it, fishing out prostitutes. i was pulling the women into the boat, sometimes by diving in, sometimes by reaching out and grabbing them. on our way back in to shore, i got to paddle. the canoe was wide and of an unusual shape to me, the paddles heavier than i’m used to and i kept banging and flinging water with mine. we traveled on inland in it, down streets and little dirt roads with minimal standing water. we came to a park-like place and a steep hill. the woman behind me was the one who ran the boat, who gave me a job. she was a native islander. she asked me if anyone had told me how to handle the boat on this hill. i didn’t. talking to her, i lost my focus. the canoe began to spin. we got in the right direction as we headed down the center of the hill in a groove carved by previous flooding. the native woman pulled on a narrow rope and a setup that looked like a travois running along the bottom of the boat and coming to a point a few feet behind the canoe began to dig into the dirt and stabilize and slow us just enough to make the descent safe. i looked across a small hill and saw a man in a smaller canoe go down another nearby hill, smiling.
i saw a herd of horses in a fenced pasture on the other side of a green lawn. i knew right away they were ponies, indian ponies. they had a unique, wild look about them, not at all like regular tame horses. i saw the leader of the herd, marked along his front left with a black outlined red triangle. one pony was a huge, hulking beast of a horse and a reddish color all over. even his face seemed big with muscle. one pony was slightly smaller than most and had no ears, his mane cropped short and standing. somehow, his face and his mane, he looked exactly like neo from the matrix, so that was how i remembered him. we went over and began to pet the ponies. suddenly, some were outside the fence. the big beast one was backing up toward me. i put out my palm and rested it on his rump to let him know i was there. he kept backing into me. i was sure i was about to get stepped all over or kicked, but he stopped and, shockingly, arched over into a backbend.
