Sorry, I Do Not Support The Troops
I find it hard to feel sorry for soldiers under fire, whether it be on base here in the US or on foreign soil. The only exception is soldiers forced into service by a draft, kidnapped and indoctrinated (although such soldiers still bear some responsibility for actions they take and the repercussions involved).
The military is a culture of violence, abusive even to its own members, all in an effort to make them better at their intended purpose: use as instruments of coercive violence meant to force others to behave according to the rules of whoever is in charge.
It is not ok to have a separate, isolated group in our culture (in any culture) permitted to act in violence on our behalf. If there is such a group and they find themselves the focus of violence because of their membership, they are not innocent victims.
I do not believe that humans are or should be nonviolent in all situations. Only that an institutionalized form of violent behavior is an open invitation to abuse of power, is an unhealthy way for people of conscience to live. I think violence has a place and a time and a purpose, but in regards to the military, it has become muddied, mired in religious fervor and rabid patriotic bullshit. It has been overused, unfairly and unnecessarily applied and is one of the most shameful aspects of our entire society.
