Hiding Out From Winter
It is brutally cold here. From what I hear, it probably is wherever you are, too, if you’re reading this. The whole nation is getting this cold snap. We have been lucky to find a few days in the teens. At night, when the heat gets turned down, we huddle under a mountain of blankets to snuggle and warm.
First, there is the laying on of freezing cold hands. Once those warm, there is the massing of bodies and the time where I try to bring heat to J’s poor bony legs. This never works. Instead of warming him, his cold sinks into my flesh until I am shaking and declare I cannot take it any longer.
At some mysterious point in the middle of the night, J flips on an internal furnace and becomes too hot to allow me to sleep nearby. Touching his heat radiating flesh makes me feel sick to my stomach and makes him sweat, so I am forced to move aside and tuck blankets in deeply all around myself. I have to cover my head from the start. I have almost no hair and the little body heat I own just flies out.
Tonight I got back into the exercising and after a short run, I was hot to the point that I couldn’t have clothes on. I washed dishes practically in the nude and thought I’d faint from the heat. In another hour, I’ll be back to shivering and waiting for the heat to kick on. By the way, thermostat, I don’t know what you’re measuring, but there is no way in hell it is 68 degrees in here. My toes are numb.
Right now, we aren’t even leaving to go to town. To avoid bad roads, the bitter and frigid temperatures and to save money, we’ve decided to try to go in only twice per month.
Thus far, this has been a terrific idea. When we leave the house, it ruins our entire day. It drains us mentally and physically. Now we do it half as often, giving us more time to work and play.
The money is responding and we haven’t run out of any essentials…except for the discovery that our months and months of garbanzo bean storage suddenly ran out. I need those beans!!! Hummus!! (Vegan) Burger meat!!! Hummus is not the same when made with kidney beans. Not at all.
