A Day in Mid-February

Today, the animals seemed to say it is spring. Yesterday was the warmest day in months, the sun was bright, the wind was mild. Today was supposed to be the most temperate yet, but it wasn’t. The wind was brisk and the temperature felt much colder than it read.
Yet today was the day the yearling calves and dog up the road decided to get all frisky and wild. The calves were funny, watching us approach, then getting scared suddenly and running for their lives; later, returning to charge the fence, very brave now that we were walking away.
The dog never acts like he did today, first barking his protective warning, then turning to puppy games, dashing about and bowing down to see if we would play or chase him. We humans were far less excitable. The wind made us both feel weak and ill and the chill chased us back inside after a short circuit of the neighborhood.
